Today is the 29th birthday of Young Money boss and superstar performer Lil Wayne – capping one of the most successful years of his long and still growing rap music career. In nearly 11 months since his release from prison, the hardworking New Orleans MC has been recording and rocking tours at a breakneck speed all while his Young Money label continued to flourish with the success of breakout star Nicki Minaj and the release of his own Tha Carter IV album.
The proud father of four will no doubt have a bash befitting of a star of his caliber and already on Twitter, members of Weezy’s YMCMB crew showered their captain with loving accolades in honor of his day of birth. Wayne, notorious for continually honing his craft in the booth, even tweeted that he intends to keep working on his birthday.
To celebrate Weezy's born day, we take a look back at a special clip from last year when the superstar MC spent his 28th birthday locked down in jail at Rikers Island. But In the words of the late great Frank White, 'things done changed." Weezy's home!
“Just kame out the booth and noticed it was my birthday…yeeeeeeeaaaaaaaahhhhhhhh!now bak to work,” tweeted Wayne in the wee hours of the morning. One of Wayne’s YM artists Drake tweeted, “Happy Bornday to di general…Weezy da boss.” Cash Money boss Bryan “Birdman” Williams lovingly added, “Hapi.BDay 2my son BMjR.realest n--.” Lil Wayne’s big day also became a top trending topic on the social media network in the United States with droves of fans tweeting exuberantly and wishing Weezy a good one.
Lil Wayne began his career at the tender age of 11, working alongside fellow youngster rapper B.G. In 1997, at the age of 15, Wayne joined up with B.G., Juvenile and Turk to form the Hot Boys – finding success in 1999 with their major label Cash Money Records debut. Wayne released his debut solo album The Block Is Hot the same year as the Hot Boys release.
Nine albums later, Wayne sits atop as one of rap music’s most recognized and beloved acts and has finagled his fame in discovering and signing talent such as the aforementioned Drake and Nicki Minaj to his Young Money label. The Hollygrove representative also continues to tour heavily as his “I Am Still Music” tour has thrilled fans stateside for months. Wayne also turned heads with his MTV “Unplugged”performance and his showstopper performance in closing out this year’s MTV Video Music Awards.
